Rising from the ruins of Taras Metanov’s USSR, Borisgrad began as an autonomously-governed province including Moskva and the surrounding country. Close cooperation with the African Union and a climate of fear and instability enabled Borisgrad to successfully be granted rule over all of southern Russia, with the exception of the Ukraine, granted independence after a referendum. Borisgrad became undisputed owner of all Russia after a series of wars and broken alliances with the religious zealots in northern Russia, finally conquering the fortress city of Murmansk after an extensive siege. Relations with Narsus and other northern nations were repaired, and Borisgrad settled down as a natural leader of the north, dominating the Socialist Alliance and rising under Premier Boris Tetranov to international heights once held by the USSR. Tetranov was elected Consul for Life by the Politburo, and while he rules with the assistance of a large cabal of experienced officers, he is effectively an absolute despot. His pro-business approach and alliance with several western European nations have ensured at least a moderate level of fiscal success in the fledgling republic. |

VIII. Economy |
|
Borisgrad inherited one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies from the powerhouse that was the USSR. Massive military purchasing couple with several ruinous wars and the loss of the Ukraine put a severe dent in the economy, and unemployment has risen dramatically under Boris Tetranov. Even so, the vast oilfields of Siberia, jointly exploited with the aid of Serandum, have gone some way to keeping the economy buoyant. The skilled labourers have been kept from emigrating by draconian laws, and the large population provides a cheap work pool. Hunger is a problem in areas of central and southern Russia, and much of the Caucus area survives on illegal smuggling. |
